Nesting box for swifts
Nesting aids for swifts in various versions as surface mounting or for integration into the facade insulation.
Here you will find alternatives to Schwegler nest boxes for swifts. The models are all suitable for compensatory measures and for professional use.
What is a swift?
Common swifts ( Apus apus ) are migratory birds that come to Europe for breeding from late April to early August. The birds are slightly larger than swallows. They have a brownish to soot-black plumage and have a gray-white throat spot. Common swifts can be recognized by their striking sriii-sriii calls, which many know from warm summer evenings.
These birds do not belong to the swallow family, but to the sailor family. They have a wingspan of over 40 centimeters. This makes them significantly larger than our domestic swallows. The swift is a bird with a rapid flight pattern and flies through the streets and backyards of towns and villages in summer.
Threat to the swift
Due to structural changes and energetic renovations, renovations or new buildings without niches and gaps, more and more nesting sites of swifts are disappearing.
Common swifts, like all wild birds, are protected in accordance with Section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).
Where do common swifts breed?
Common swifts originally breed on rock faces and trees. You followed man into the cities. As so-called cultural followers, they conquered buildings as artificial rocks. Especially on old buildings you will find crevasses and nesting areas in the area of the eaves. In older buildings, these areas are behind rain gutters and in the transition from masonry to the roof structure. Common swifts have used these columns as breeding grounds for many decades. Common swifts are breeders of colonies and some colonies have existed on historic buildings for centuries.
Even on new buildings and flat roofs, these birds occasionally find crevice quarters in the area of the parapet and under cladding or in woodpecker holes in thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). There are also swift quarters between parapet sheet and ETICS systems.
Mount swift nesting box correctly - what height?
Nest boxes for swifts should be at least 5 meters above the ground and offer a free approach. There are also sightings of entries into houses at a height of 4 meters. The minimum height for hanging swifts nesting aids should therefore be 4 meters. There is no upper limit for attaching the glider boxes. Swift nest boxes can be attached to single-family houses as well as high-rise buildings.
A free approach of at least 4 meters below the box is important. The eaves areas and the attic areas of multi-storey houses are particularly suitable. The eaves area, i.e. the area where a gable roof rests on the masonry, of an apartment building is very suitable for the installation of a swift nest box. You can accelerate the successful settlement by swifts with the help of a dummy sound.
Alternative to Schwegler nest box for swifts
Schwegler is one of the best-known manufacturers of nesting boxes for swifts. There are different models of nesting boxes for these animals. All models are made of wood concrete or concrete.
The Schwegler company has very long delivery times, especially for the swift nest boxes. Save yourself long waiting times.
The suitable alternative for the Schwegler Swift & Bat House 1MF model is here: nesting box for swifts, sparrows and bats from the Gruenstifter company.
Nesting box for swifts and bats in one
This all-in-one solution is a nesting box for building breeders such as swifts, sparrows and bats. If the nest box is installed as a surface-mounted version, a special gap is created between the masonry and the box. This gap is particularly attractive for bat species that live in the building. For example, dwarf bats find space in this gap. The artificial fissile quarter for bats is designed in such a way that a warming bell forms in the upper part, which is particularly interesting for exploring bats and for day nurseries. Bats and swifts don't get in each other's way. Both types can use the box at the same time.
Nesting box also suitable for sparrows
The nesting aid simulates a fissure district that sparrows like to accept. House sparrows are so-called pointer types for swifts. Sparrows mostly accept the quarter as pioneers and show swifts that there is a nesting possibility. With the use of this swift box you create new nesting sites with ideal conditions.
adequately protected. A nest recess for swifts is integrated in the nesting box. The nest recess is designed in such a way that the eggs do not roll and the nest recess is embedded in the ground in such a way that the young sailors cannot fall over the edge. The nest trough for swifts by Schwegler, for example, often ensures that young sailors fall over the edge and are no longer fed by the parent animals. This phenomenon no longer happens with the nesting box for swifts, sparrows and bats from the Gruenstifter company.
Cleaning of the swift box
The cleaning of a swift box is not necessary. The adult birds breed and use the nest again every year. In very exposed locations, cleaning of the nesting site is not possible. Imagine a nesting site on a natural rock. This is not cleaned. To protect against enemies, the adult birds bring the manure out of the nest. Nature regulates that.
Alternative to swift ETICS installation box type 1A
The nesting box for wall sailers made of ETICS system material is the suitable alternative to the Schwegler swift installation box type 1A. The boxes are particularly light in weight and can be integrated directly into the facade. The ETICS installation boxes for swifts are available in different versions.
Common swift nesting box for ETICS (facade insulation)
This nesting aid for swifts and sparrows is suitable for integration into the thermal insulation of facades. The nesting box is made of WDV-S material and, thanks to its dimensions, can be integrated directly into the thermal insulation composite system as a replacement quarters for swifts. The swift box is very light and can be integrated into the external insulation of buildings thanks to the protruding approach ring. After installing the artificial slatted quarter, only the entry hole can be seen.
NABU and BUND recommend:
"Since the swift broods in colonies, it is advisable to attach at least three boxes. It is important to have a free arrival and departure and a free flight space under the nest box can relate directly. " (NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland eV)
"Already in the planning phase of the modernization or heat renovation of buildings or the construction of new houses, the protection of the swifts and other endangered building breeders should be considered. The primary aim should be to preserve existing nesting sites To integrate nesting stones inconspicuously or even optically attractively into the facade or to install them outside." (BUND Region Hannover)
