Bats at the house?

There are 25 bat species known in Germany. Only a part of it seeks human closeness in summer with shelter in and on buildings to raise the offspring. One of the so-called domestic bats is the  pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pipistrellus ).

In the early summer months, bats give birth to their young and find themselves in summer quarters. The females raise the young animals in so-called weekly rooms. The quarters are changed several times during the year. The mammals stay in a quarters only for a limited time.

A distinction is made between the bat roosts according to their function. Summer quarters are visited by the females as day rooms. Also, these  are changed depending on weather conditions. There are so-called interim quarters, which are occupied shortly before and after the boys are raised.

The offer of many differently exposed crevasses on a building in different directions supports bats living in the house.

Endangerment of the bats

Due to structural changes and energetic renovations, renovations or new buildings without niches and crevasses, more and more crevice areas for bats on buildings are disappearing.

Bats, like all strictly protected animals, are protected in accordance with Section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).

Hanging the bat nest box correctly - what should you watch out for?

By attaching bat boxes you create additional, valuable quarters. There must be no obstacles such as branches in the approach lane. The quarters must be placed at least 3 meters above the ground. It is essential to ensure that the approach is free so that the bats can swarm in front of the box.

Cats must not be able to position themselves under the box. Cats can intercept the flying bats.

To avoid contamination and conflicts caused by droppings falling out, bat boxes should not be hung over windows, balconies, house entrances or sitting areas.

Bats have different microclimatic requirements depending on the season and type. Therefore, the replacement quarters should be offered in different directions from sunny to partially shaded. There can never be too many!

Basically, all directions are possible for the alignment of the entry opening . Southeast to northwest are preferred orientations for bat boxes. East to north-west is also possible, north to north-east are also useful as a cool place to hang out, especially in hot weather.

Bats avoid light, no lighting should fall on the boxes! Drafts keep bats away. Bats love it warm in summer.

Bat boxes as a replacement

If bat boxes are used as a substitute measure, please note:

The closer the bat boxes are to the original quarters, the more successful the measure will be. In principle, an attempt should be made to preserve the original quarters and to add other quarters.

Cleaning a bat box

The maintenance of a self-cleaning bat box is not necessary. The dry droppings fall out of the box.

Quelle: Wikipedia
